Speaker Bio:

Captain Mike Melly is a Master Mariner with extensive experience across the maritime industry, including seafaring, marine surveying, consulting, accident investigation and seafarer training. He began his seagoing career in 1977 and obtained his Master Mariner (Foreign-Going) Certificate of Competency in 1987.

Throughout his career, Captain Melly has maintained a strong focus on the development and mentorship of young seafarers. He has been involved in cadet recruitment, officer career development and accelerated onboard training, including supporting South African cadets pursuing enhanced maritime training internationally.

He currently serves as General Manager of Solis Marine South Africa, specialising in navigation-accident investigations, while continuing his work in seafarer training and mentoring. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute, an Executive Committee member of the Society of Master Mariners of South Africa, and Vice-Chairman of the Durban Port Welfare Committee. Captain Melly is a passionate advocate for seafarers and is committed to supporting the next generation of maritime professionals.
