Be part of us as we take a closer look at Seafarer Cadet and Officer Training in South Africa today — exploring the opportunities\, challenges and realities shaping the development of the next generation of seafarers. \nGuest Speaker: Captain Mike Melly\nDiscussion Moderator: Captain Brendon Hawley CMMar – AFNI – FICS (Hon) – HCMM \nSpeaker Bio: \nCaptain Mike Melly is a Master Mariner with extensive experience across the maritime industry\, including seafaring\, marine surveying\, consulting\, accident investigation and seafarer training. He began his seagoing career in 1977 and obtained his Master Mariner (Foreign-Going) Certificate of Competency in 1987. \n\n\n\nThroughout his career\, Captain Melly has maintained a strong focus on the development and mentorship of young seafarers. He has been involved in cadet recruitment\, officer career development and accelerated onboard training\, including supporting South African cadets pursuing enhanced maritime training internationally.\n \n\n\nHe currently serves as General Manager of Solis Marine South Africa\, specialising in navigation-accident investigations\, while continuing his work in seafarer training and mentoring. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute\, an Executive Committee member of the Society of Master Mariners of South Africa\, and Vice-Chairman of the Durban Port Welfare Committee.
