The Understanding Shipping Course is based on nine correspondence lessons, with a personal tutor assigned to each student. Should they be successful in the course, they will be awarded the Understanding Shipping Certificate.

In the year of 2020, 26 students completed the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Understanding Shipping course.

Here are some comments received from our students:

I will recommend to family and friends to take on the course as it was very informative and helpful. 

Very informative, still have textbooks for reference. Will be taking on foundation diploma in the future. Recommends ICS to all those in the shipping Industry

Quite interesting, learnt a lot in the course and enjoyed it. The tutor was really helpful and gave the best feedback.

Being a bookkeeper for almost 8 years and then trying a new career in shipping was a huge step for me, but the US Course has helped understand the foundation of shipping. Through this course I was able to secure a position within a well-recognized Shipping Company.

The Understanding Shipping is an introductory course offered to all those new into the maritime industry as well as those who wish to widen their horizon and take on more knowledge of their current careers in shipping.

The course is adapted to assist with terminology, geography insight with trade routes and ports, the different types of ships in our international waters, documentation as well as insight to all the players in the maritime industry. 

The South African course chapter 9 consists of information of South African ports and cargoes, this is very useful for South African employees within our industry.

Nine months, nine assignments and a pass of the final assessment will grant you a certificate issued by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in London.

Here in South Africa, we offer the course every 3 months, with the next cohort commencing on the 1^st of June 2021.

We’re delighted that the pass rate for the November 2019 exams was nearly 65%, which makes it the most successful exam session we’ve had in the last decade.

• 27 February 2020: Laytime (Everyone’s favourite!)
• 19 March 2020: Hague, Hague-Visby and Hamburg Rules
• 16 April 2020: Preparing for Exams / Exam Techniques.

A reminder to our students that the exam questions are set from the syllabus to be found on the London Website, not only from the ICS course work. Knowledge garnered outside of the course work is also welcomed.
